He & She, written by first wave feminist playwright Rachel Crothers, is a witty, complex tale of female aspiration and sacrifice first performed on Broadway in 1920—the same year a woman’s right to vote was finally recognized in the U.S.
Talented sculptress Ann Herford thinks she has it all: supportive husband and fellow sculptor, Tom; headstrong teenaged daughter, Millicent; and lovingly skeptical mother, Mrs. Remington. But when Ann’s artistic ambition threatens to eclipse Tom, will she be forced to choose between her family and her dreams?
Ruth Creel, Ann’s closest friend, is an accomplished journalist whose career is about to take off. Will she be grounded by her fiancé Keith’s insistence that a woman’s place is in the home?
Daisy Herford runs Tom’s business with a haughty efficiency that intimidates everyone. Is Mrs. Remington right that this professional drive masks a longing for love and domestic surrender?
Charming, challenging, and decades head of its time, He & She remains fiercely relevant to the ongoing struggle women face for gender equality and opportunity.
