"Tales from Beyond the Ban: Folktales from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen was inspired by the initial travel ban enacted in January 2016 while I was teaching international teaching assistants at a midwestern university. With my students' support, I developed a program of oral tradition tales from the seven targeted countries, and also interviewed them about how the images in oral tales provide useful metaphors for facing modern-day difficulties. Forty years of telling folk and fairy tales from preschool to prison has persuaded me that oral tradition tales are meant to teach us how to be human in an often-hostile world, and to expand our view of humanity beyond the parameters of one culture and one lifetime. I use this storytelling event to engage my listeners through shared metaphors in the plight of immigrants and to rebuild a sense of community for those who have been targeted." – Creator Milbre Burch
