(Un)Civilized Nation: Part 1, Dirty Laundry is a 15-minute solo that explores whiteness, wokeness, and the ways that white people think they are woke perpetuate racism. It also explores the transition from ignorance to working to be an ally to Black people and People of Color through effective anti-racism.
As the performer and choreographer, I draw from my own self-reflection about my racism, the ways that I have tried to hide it and the shame that I feel confessing it. I candidly share events, incidents, and beliefs that I have held in the past and in the present that demonstrate my racism and the ways that I fail to confront it. The audience will see me transition from apathy to the desire to change my behavior and become an effective ally.
The solo combines movement, text, and audience participation. The movement expresses the anxiety of recognizing your own racist through both virtuosic and pedestrian movement. The contrast of these movement styles demonstrates the transition from apathy to self-reflection and self-awareness, to the determination to create change. The text provides a narration of these inner processes while confronting the audience (especially white audience members) with reflections of their own internalized racism and internalized bias through a conversational style.
The audience will participate in the work by reading out descriptions of my racist beliefs and actions from the past and present. The solo is designed to invite the audience to come with me on my journey of understanding my place in a systemic built on oppression and learning how to dismantle this system." – Creator Nicole Lawson
