Praxis is a methodology for facilitating collective social action pioneered by Brazilian pedagogue Paolo Freire. The methodology combines the dialogue necessary for consciousness-raising with collective, direct action to protest and/or resolve a social issue. In Brazil, Freire used this methodology to assist
favela communities affected by poverty and racism in demanding equal political representation and legal protections.
Today, many community artists and activists use praxis in their creative process. This process is invaluable for artists that use their work to create social change. In this workshop, participants will learn how to adapt praxis to one's specific creative process. Participants will learn how to set intentions for the scope and reach of their project and how to create an emotionally safe space for collaborators. The session will culminate with a micro-play created by the participants, which will be recorded and sent to participants via email following the workshop.
